Augmented reality wayfinding at Gatwick airport is powered by 2000 beacons. This indoor navigation system was implemented in 3-weeks time. The lack of satellite signs makes it difficult to use navigation systems such as google and apple maps and beacons come in handy here.
The beacon system also enables an augmented reality wayfinding tool – so passengers can be shown directions in the camera view of their mobile device – locate check-in, departure gates and baggage belts
This can be used by airlines to send specific information and also provide opportunities for retailers to promote offers based on proximity. Gatwick airport is the first airport to deploy augmented reality technology and it is expected that the other airports should soon follow suit.
